Imagine if there were no stories. for example the American Revolution. Then when we think of the American Revolution, we think of it more like a list of events that mean nothing, and just a means to and end. If people constantly lived their lives as "A means to an end" or completely objective based, why would we keep going? We would know that everything would just but a hit or miss, like the flip of a coin. But imagine that soldier fighting in the Revolution. He doesn't go into battle thinking victory is like the flip of a coin, he knows the story and meaning behind why he is fighting, which keeps him, and the future of his nation going.
